On the first anniversary of the election of our government I pause to reflect on the year that has gone by. It has certainly gone fast, as so many initiatives have been undertaken. While I know my constituents and all Canadians still expect a great deal more, I am proud to serve as part of a government that has already implemented many policies that are evidence-based, ethically sound and make economic sense.
Restoring the long form census as our very first act as a government speaks about our commitment to legislate based on evidence, not ideology. Promoting initiatives like the new Canada Child Benefit conforms with our goal of stimulating the economy while simultaneously ensuring government assistance goes to those who need it the most. Most fundamentally, I’m proud to serve in a government that believes that ethically sound initiatives like welcoming over 31,000 Syrian refugees reflects the values of compassion and tolerance that Canadians hold dear.
I’m grateful to have been entrusted with this role by the constituents of Parkdale-High Park, and I look forward to continuing the important work of implementing policies to improve the situation of all Canadians in the years to come.
